Abstract

Background –  Chemotherapy process experienced by children with cancer in general can cause changes quality of sleep. The purpose of this study to describe quality of sleep in children with post-chemotherapy cancer at Rumah Singgah Yayasan Peduli Kanker Anak Bali. 


Methods – The research design uses analytical descriptive research with a survey approach. The sampling technique used in this research is non-probability sampling with purposive sampling technique (n=31). Data collection was carried out from April to May 2022. The instruments used are the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire.


Results – The results of the characteristic description test of cancer children showed that the majority of respondents were in school age (6-12 years) 12 (38.7%), male sex 18 (58.1%), ALL cancer types 19 (61.3%), non-school 14 (45.2%), sufficient sleep habits are 22 (71%). The description of sleep quality in children with post-chemotherapy cancer showed that most of the respondents had good sleep quality 19 (61.3%). The results of the cross tabulation test of the characteristics respondents with a description of quality sleep in cancer children mostly experienced good sleep quality at school age (6-12 years) 9 (75%), male sex 13 (72,2%), ALL cancer types 15 (78.9%), non-school was 9 (64.3%), sufficient sleep habits 13 (59.1%). 


Conclusion – The majority of children with cancer after chemotherapy demonstrated good sleep quality. Good sleep quality should be maintained through parental support and continuous monitoring. These findings highlight the important role of nurses in routinely assessing sleep quality, providing sleep hygiene education, and managing factors that may interfere with sleep in children with cancer. These interventions are expected to help maintain optimal sleep quality and support the recovery process during cancer treatment.
