Abstract

BackgroundBreast cancer remains the leading malignancy among women in Indonesia. Mastectomy, while life-saving, often leads to significant psychological distress, body image disturbances, and sexual dysfunction. Nurses play a strategic role in providing psychosexual support through evidence-based interventions, such as the PLISSIT model (Permission, Limited Information, Specific Suggestions, and Intensive Therapy). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PLISSIT-based sexual counseling on the sexual function of breast cancer survivors’ post-mastectomy.

MethodsThis study employed a narrative literature review design. A comprehensive search was conducted across Scopus, Wiley Online Library, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library databases for articles published between 2015 and 2025. Inclusion criteria focused on full-text English articles involving post-mastectomy patients receiving PLISSIT model interventions.

ResultsAnalysis of five selected articles demonstrates that the PLISSIT model significantly improves sexual function, emotional satisfaction, and partner communication while reducing sexual distress and anxiety. While highly effective in addressing psychosexual aspects and body image, additional multidisciplinary approaches are often required to manage chronic physiological sexual dysfunctions.

Conclusion – The PLISSIT counseling model is a practical and efficient method for integration into holistic nursing care to enhance the overall quality of life for breast cancer survivors.
